Why ajaxchess?

Why build a chess site with asynchronous javascript? Simple, most existing chess sites (FICS, ICC ...) require you to download an "interface program" which might or might not be so easy to install. There's lots of interfaces to choose from, so it might take awhile..... Ajax will soon allow you to talk to a chess site with just a modern browser. In addition, we are interested in chess variants around here (I first read a book on the topic 30 years ago). You'll note most existing chess sites are limited to the 8 by 8 board. It is our hope to surpass that limitation so that all the historical variants that precede the modern game (most were played on 10 by 10 boards) and non-standard variants on the modern game might be played here in the future.
